In September 2023, I was asked to help design and produce a book as a tribute to Towards Freedom, a 70+-year-old newsletter that was being retired. In 1952, Bill Lloyd started the newsletter to inform readers in the US about independence movements taking place in Africa. Lloyd’s newsletter would evolve over the next 70 years into a print magazine and then a website with the mission to publish international reporting from a grassroots perspective and incisive analysis that exposed government and corporate abuses of power, while supporting movements for universal peace, justice, freedom, the environment, and human rights. Provocative and at times controversial, Toward Freedom consistently published a wide diversity of voices from the frontlines of liberation struggles around the world.
The tribute would be built on anecdotes, memories and images from editors, writers and photographers that contributed to the publication through the years and would represent the spirit and meaning of the mission. Altogether, 18 essays and 78 photos provide an in-depth look into a venerable publication.
This project gave me a chance to work with a gorgeous template from Envato Elements that enhanced the visuals and lent the book a newsletter feel. At the final banquet that brought together the members and contributors to the organization, Toward Freedom was gifted to all those who made it the success it became. I heard that people were delighted. I am honored to have been a part of creating this tribute to an organization devoted to peace, justice and human rights.
